Welcome to the den of the Chowdren, where all chows and chow mixes (and their people!) have a home! Chow chows are best known as big, red, bear-like dogs with a happy smile and a curled-over tail. They also come in black and cream and both long and short coats. They tend to be one-person dogs and can form bonds of intense loyalty with their owners (who not surprisingly feel just the same way about their chows).

The Chow Chow is an ancient Chinese breed. In historic times, it was used to hunt, herd, and protect homes.

Like the Chinese Shar-Pei, Chow Chows have a blue-black tongue. Another feature unique to the Chow Chow is its restricted peripheral vision. The dog should be approached within the range of its vision to prevent alarming it.

Chow Chows were shown in the United States in the 1890s. They were recognized by the AKC in 1903.
