Meet the Chesapeake Bay Retriever

In 1807, a ship was wrecked off the coast of Maryland. On board were two Newfoundland puppies, a red male dog named "Sailor" and a black female called "Canton." Offspring of Canton and Sailor went on to prove amazingly adept at retrieving ducks in the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay, sometimes retrieving as many as 200 ducks in one day.

Today, these active, athletic dogs retain the skill and determination of their ancestors. They are frequently used as hunting dogs and companions. They also compete in the show ring and the field.
