Known in Malta as "Kelb tal-Fenek," the Pharaoh Hound either originated in Egypt and was brought to Malta thousands of years ago, or originated in Malta itself. Although the breed was treasured and preserved over the centuries in Malta, opinions differ about the origin of the hound, even to the point of controversy.

As an all-purpose hound who specializes in rabbit and is fast and agile, the Pharaoh Hound combines grace with utility and astonishing good looks. The hound's amber-colored eyes are a feature of those good looks. Some of them actually appear to be smiling! They have excellent hearing, which makes them alert watchdogs who will "announce" (bark at) the arrival of anyone coming to the door!

Other traits of the Pharaoh Hound are intelligence, friendliness, and alertness. It is also playful and enjoys being with the children of the family. The need for daily exercise can be met with a romp or a game with the children. The Pharaoh Hound arrived in the United States in the late 1960s and was registered by the AKC in the 1980s.
